Absorption Minister Sofa Landver on Tuesday criticized the media's "racist generalization" of olim from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) following the arrest and confession of Oshrenko homicide suspect Dimitry Kirilik. "Talk of the need to check aliya candidates more strictly and change the Law of Return are unfortunate and racist," she told Army Radio. Such remarks are "an attempt to insinuate that a whole public from a certain origin has criminal tendencies."

Israel's immigration minister, Sofa Landver, ended a visit to the Ukraine this week without managing to settle the contentious issue of pensions for immigrants to Israel. Unlike Russians living in Israel, who receive their full pensions from the Russian government, Ukrainian olim do not receive any funds. This includes a large number of men who took part in the cleanup of the Chernobyl nuclear plant after the reactor accident in 1996 and suffer from ill health as a result.

Thousands of jobless immigrants attended what was termed an "emergency job fair" at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds on Tuesday, as Absorption Ministry officials warned that the employment picture for recent arrivals could deteriorate. The career fair, organized by the ministry, featured 40 companies looking to fill a total of 1,000 jobs. Firms hiring included local giants like Teva, Partner, Bezeq, the Israel Electric Corp. and Yes, with most of the jobs in marketing, sales and technical support.

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, 993 thousand people immigrated to Israel, 90% of them from Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus. Only 5-6% of all immigrants returned to their home country or continued to other destinations.
